What do you when you have an exam the very next day? You prepare yourself today, don’t you? Same applies to when you have to wake up early in the morning to spend your day productive and successful. You have to prepare yourself the evening before as highly successful people do.
Ordinary people reach home after office and get attached to TV and cell phone. They watch TV shows one after another and then scroll social media platforms ups and down until midnight. They laughing at social media videos and posts without giving any second thought if their activities are benefiting them in any way. While reading about highly successful people I noticed that successful people such as Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Jack Dorsey and Oprah Winfrey follow their evening and morning routines rigorously. I also follow some of their routines and found that it helps to be more energetic, happy, and make people more productive. Moreover, evening routines help to wake up early without feeling tired and drowsy in the morning.
Let’s discuss what are the evening routines that highly successful people follow.
Unplug from all the devices
We have a habit of using cellphones unnecessary until we fall asleep automatically and then we complain about not able to wake up in the morning on time. On the other hand, successful people go on a digital detox at least two hours of bedtime. It is because laptop, cell phone and TV can disturb sleep and make them awake late at night.

“Smartphones are almost perfectly designed to disrupt sleep,” said Russell E. Johnson, an assistant professor of management at Michigan State’s Broad College of Business, in a statement.
Johnson admits to keeping his smartphone at his bedside at night. “Because they keep us mentally engaged late into the evening, they make it hard to detach from work so we can relax and fall asleep,” he added.
Reflect on your day
At the end of the day take time to introspect yourself. You will come to know the mistakes you made. But, don’t get disappointed by your mistakes instead, learn from them. Moreover, appreciate yourself for the achievements you made in your day. Introspection will help you to know if you are deviating from your goals.
For instance, you missed a train today which led you to cancel your important client meeting. It was your mistake. Instead of getting disappointed by the mistake you made and curse yourself you should figure out how you will not repeat the same mistake. Reflection helps to find out the solutions for your problems.

Plan your next day
Benjamin Franklin put it crystal and clear, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!” Do you really want to fail every day? Absolutely not. So before you end your day make sure you make a plan how you want to spend your next day. A to-do list where tasks and time frame for the tasks are written will suffice. One of the highly successful people Robin Sharma plans his whole week on weekends.
While making to-do list or planning the next day you might be misinterpreted by the thought that what if something urgent and important come across to your day. It happens to everyone. However, because of just one urgent task, you can not ruin your entire day. See you either run your day or days run you. If you let days run you then you will lead nowhere. Eventually, you will regret not having control over your days.
Do some reading
All day you are in hustle bustle and your mind is in restless. If you don’t keep your mind in rest before sleeping your sleep will be restless. There can be many things to keep the mind in rest such as meditation, prayers and reading etc. I would suggest reading books because by reading books before sleeping you will able to kill two birds with one stone. You will learn something new and your mind will be restful while sleeping. Bill Gates reads at least one hours before he sleeps.
Researchers at the University of Surrey (UK) found that stress levels can be reduced by as much as 68 percent by reading before bed.

Take some light walk
You will fall asleep sooner when you are a little tired physically. Take a walk after your supper which will not only help in reducing stress levels but also boost your blood circulation – both important for a good night’s sleep.
How fantastic it is, isn’t it? You are away from work and taking walk after dinner. It feels so much relief that you don’t want to miss this ritual once you start.
Make a family ritual
You are busy all day at work to achieve extraordinary in your career. However, if you fail to have a better relationship with your family then you fail to achieve happiness in life. Happiness is the most important aspects of a successful life. World’s richest man Jeff Bezos Chief Executive Officer and founder of Amazon says he has breakfast with his family, especially with his children every day. He does not want to lose the quality time with his children.
American Psychological Association’s (APA) Journal of Family Psychology, finds that family routines and rituals are alive and well and are associated with marital satisfaction, adolescents’ sense of personal identity, children’s health, academic achievement and stronger family relationships.
If you can’t have family routines or rituals in the morning then make it for the evening. It can be anything from talking to each other, having dinner together, go for a walk etc.
It will be great if you can follow all the above evening rituals. However, I would highly suggest the first one ‘Unplug from all the devices’ ‘Reading books’ and ‘Family rituals’. All the above evening ritauls will also help you to wake up early in the morning because you will fall asleep early if you are away from all the devices and read books.
