Earlier, 20 Rakat and eight Rakat Taraweeh was the matter of the debate and discussion. Now, not only Rakat but days has also been reduced to 5-day and 10-day Taraweeh.

Two days prior to the commencement of this Ramadan I saw new posters were posted outside and inside the mosque wherein I usually visit for prayers. I did not pay heed to the posters thinking it might be some new announcement or rule of the mosque.

However, on the first day of Ramadan when I finally get to read what is written in the posters, I was disappointed. The posters made me think that how irresponsible and disrespectful can some Maulana (clerics) be even in the precious days of Ramadan.

The posets were an announcement calling Muslims to join Taraweeh that is scheduled for only five days. Which means that the Taraweeh will be finished in five days, instead of 30 days.

It is not the point of discussion who came up with this idea of finishing Taraweeh like a race. What is needed to be discussed that how and why the Taraweeh is reduced to 5-day and 10-day somewhere from 30-day.

There can be only one possibility for why it is reduced. People who join such Taraweeh are not interested at all in the Quran. They just want to finish it for the sake of finishing it. They are showing off to others that they are praying. In reality, they are not.

It is unfortunate to say that some Muslims do not have time for such prayers which is so beneficial in Ramadan.

I had a word with one of my friends regarding it. He said that those who don’t have time to practice Taraweeh prayer for whole Ramadan join in such Taraweeh. However, this reason is absolutely invalid.  Because Ramadan is the month when Muslims have to manage more time for prayers. For some reasons, if they can not they have no right to disrespect Quran and this beneficial month by making Taraweeh a race.

The Quran that is read in Taraweeh is so important for all of us that it is instructed to read it carefully, slowly and understand it in order to gain some wisdom from it. Shape your life accordingly.

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr said: The Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) said: “Read the Qur’an in a month.” I said: I am able to do better than that… Until he said: “Then read it once every seven days, and do not do any more than that.” [Al-Bukhaari (4767) and Muslim (1159)]

From the above Hadith, teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), it is clear that 5-day and 10-day Taraweeh is not acceptable at all.

Ismail ibn Musa Menk, also known as Mufti Menk, is a Muslim cleric and Grand Mufti of Zimbabwe says in one of his speeches, “Do not practice Taraweeh instead of finishing it so fast. It makes Allah angry.”

He further added that you may not finish Quran in Taraweeh but if it is read with concentration and beautiful way Allah will love it and you will be rewarded.

Remember, Taraweeh is not obligatory. However,  we try hard to practice it so that we can earn more rewards. It also beefs up the tie between Quran and Muslims. However, joining such innovative Taraweeh will make us disrespect Quran and it will prove that we just want to get rid of prayers and Quran.
