Leading an effective and successful life is not an art but a science. There is a systematic method to follow for a successful life. If you follow the system you will be what you want to be, or else you will regret not following the system afterwards. Stephen R. Covey in his book “The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People” dedicated a chapter titled “Sharpen The Saw”. The chapter talks about how a person can work on four aspects of life and become an effective and successful person. Where in I would like to explain three of them here.

Have you ever pondered upon why companies look for people who have some kind of experience in the profile they are looking for? Do you know why companies provide internship? Not only because companies need more hands free of cost. It is because companies need people who are informed about the mechanism of industries. They do not want people who are well-versed in theory but have no idea about how the industry works in their profession.

That is called “Sharpen The Saw”. Companies need people who have sharpened their saws a little bit before they could work full time in the companies. A tree can consume many hours to cut if your saw is not sharpened. Same applies to our lives too. The chances of failure will be high If we do not sharpen our physical, mental and spiritual aspects of life.

Here are some tips for sharpening the three aspects of life continuously to be more successful and lead an effective life.

Everybody wants a good health but very few get up early in the morning and exercise. That is what the irony of our life. The formula is very simple. You have to sacrifice something least important in order to achieve something most important.

“There is no pill that comes close to what exercise can do. And if there was one, it would be extremely expensive,” says Claude Bouchard, director of the human genomics laboratory at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana.

Exercise has so many benefits. It helps you to avoid depression and gives you sharper mind, happy life, good looking skin, recovery from major illness. Moreover, it helps you to resize yourself too.

There are two most cited reasons for not able to exercise regularly. First, they do not have time and second is they are too lazy to exercise. Unfortunately, both the reasons are unacceptable.

Exercise just takes 30 to 45 minutes. It can be anything from walking, running swimming to cycling. It is good if you can join a gym but for regular exercise to be fit and active jogging for 30-45 minutes is enough.

Updating and enhancing knowledge is necessary to lead an effective and successful life. It is necessary to indulge ourselves in activities that help us to enhance knowledge. This helps to sharpen the mind. The best way to sharpen the mind is to read, read and read. As Joseph Addison suggests, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”

Stephen writes in his book that there is no better way to inform and expand your mind on a regular basis than to get into the habit of reading good literature. Stephen suggests starting with one book a month. Then a book in two weeks and then one book in a week.

“The person who does not read is no better off than the person who can’t read.” Stephen R. Covey.

Bill Gates reads at least one hour before he sleeps at night to sharpen his mind. You can figure out what time suits you and stick to your schedule.

Stephen writes in his book that someone inquired of a Far Eastern Zen master, who had a great serenity and peace about him no matter what pressures he faced, “How do you maintain that serenity and peace?” He replied, “I never leave my place of meditation.”

He would meditate early in the morning and for the rest of the day, he carried the peace of those moments with him in his mind and heart.

In this busy and stressful life, it is very important to maintain peace and serenity of own mind to lead a happy and peaceful life. Or else, it will destroy many relationships as we can observe around us. We do not feel peace because of self-centred life. Whatever we are doing it should serve the society too.

Prayer is one of the best sources of peace and serenity of mind. As I experience it all the time. If you are in trouble and confused just isolate yourself and indulge yourself in prayer. Talk to almighty Allah, the creator of the world. This will definitely give you a peaceful mind and ways to get out of the confused situation. Maintain consistency in your prayer and you will achieve long-term peace and serenity.

Work on above three aspects of your life consistently and you will get the life you want.
