Once my cell phone rang in the middle of the night. I tried to hold my cell phone firmly in my hand while forcing my eyes to open. It was my best friend’s name flashing on my cell phone’s screen. Initially, I was scared as if something bad happened to him. However, the midnight conversation helped me to know three aspects of life that need to be worked on to live like an example for others.

As soon as I picked up the call I inquired if everything was okay. He replied, “yes everything is fine. However, there is something that has been bothering me for a long time.”

He said that he is doing good in life. Earning money, enjoying with friends, buying whatever he wants. However, “I am not doing anything for the world hereafter. I am not preparing myself to present before Allah,” he said.

He went on saying that he spends all his day in office and end up doing nothing to worship Allah and doing something for the society.

The conversation that night made me think that how self-centric we have become. We just think of own-self and escape the responsibilities towards the society.

If you are living self-centric life then you have to do something to keep yourself away from such life.

“At the end of the day, it’s not about what you have or what you’ve accomplished… It’s all about whom you’ve lifted up, whom you’ve made better. It’s about what you’ve given back.” Denzel Washington

Allah says in the Quran that we are the best people ever created for the mankind. “You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind….”

How can we be the best mankind for the nation if we spend all our time on own life? We are here to do something extraordinary. We are here to do something for the mankind. We are here to do something for the society.

Here are three aspects of life that need to be worked on to give back to the society. This also makes you an example for others.

You need to make sure that you are punctual for five times mandatory prayers. Improve your worship by practising it daily and as much as possible through optional (sunnah) prayers.

The biggest problem for us is waking up early morning for Fajr prayer. Wake up for it no matter how hard it is.

Prayer makes people better. Quran says, “Recite what is sent of the Book by inspiration to thee, and establish Regular Prayer: for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds, and remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without the doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds) that ye do.” [Quran, 29:45]

No matter how much money you have. No matter how good looking you are. If you have no knowledge you are nothing. You can not leave your marks in the society without knowledge.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) would often ask Allah for more knowledge. “And say: `My Rubb! Increase me in knowledge.” [Quran, 20:114]

Ibn Mas`ud (May Allah Be Pleased With Him) reported: The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said “Envy is permitted only in two cases: A man whom Allah gives wealth, and he disposes of it rightfully, and a man to whom Allah gives knowledge which he applies and teaches it.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The above hadiths (teachings of Islam) tells us the importance of knowledge.

Muslims should spend some time helping others. It can be anything from helping poor individually to join an organization that works for the underprivileged. Service makes a person feel happy and satisfied.

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said, “The believers, in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other, are like a single body; if one limb feels pain, the whole body becomes feverish and restless.”

Do not ignore this responsibility. Take time to indulge in social service. Weekends can be a good time for this. Instead of watching movies and gossiping with friends you can do something for the society.

Stop living self-centric life. work on the above three aspects of your life. This will help you achieve success and happiness in this world and hereafter.
